Deborah "Debbie" McMurtrey, 59, passed away on June 29, 2024, in Athens, Alabama. Born on April 11, 1965, at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Debbie grew up to serve her country and community with unparalleled dedication. Her biggest passion, however, was taking care of her children, husband, family, and everyone around her.
A graduate of North Carolina State, Debbie earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. She then embarked on a distinguished 23-year career in the United States Air Force, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 2012. Debbie commanded at multiple levels, including commanding the 735th Civil Engineering Squadron and being the Civil Engineer for the United States Air Force Academy. She also served in critical Service and Joint Staff positions including the East Africa Desk Chief at the Joint Staff J5 and the Executive Officer to the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Debbie was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Athens, where her Celebration of Life will be held on July 3, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. She was deeply involved in her community, particularly with the Athens Boy Scout Troop 240 and Cub Scout Pack 24. She was also the President of the Athens High School Band Parent Association and supported the Athens Limestone Veterinary Office and Animal Shelter. Additionally, Debbie poured her heart and countless hours serving as the secretary of the Athens Make A Way Foundation.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Colonel (Ret) Charles L. McMurtrey, III; her children, Rebecca Ann McMurtrey and Charles L. McMurtrey, IV; her mother-in-law, Ms. Melva McMurtrey; her sister, Alice Crawford of Atlanta, Georgia; and her brother, Edgar Crawford of Haleiwa, Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar and Shirley Crawford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Debbie’s memory can be made to the Athens Limestone Animal Shelter. Debbie's legacy of service and compassion remains a guiding light to all who knew her.
Military Honors will be rendered, and she will be interned at the National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama, on Thursday, July 18th,2024 at 2 p.m..
