David Herschel Owen

David Herschel Owen, age 66, of Florida, formerly of Athens, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024 in Tallahassee, FL. Mr. Owen was born March 5, 1958 in Lester, AL to Herschel Owen and Frances Kuykendall Owen. He is preceded in death by his father and one brother, Jonathan Brents Owen.

Mr. Owen graduated from Athens Bible School, where he earned a basketball scholarship, and he attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery. He enjoyed basketball and golf, and he was an avid Alabama fan. He retired from General Motors where he was employed for 39 years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Valerie, of 39 years; his mother, Frances Owen of Athens; one son, David Chase Owen of Crawfordville, FL; one daughter, Lauren Dye and husband Denny, of Crawfordville, FL; two grandchildren, Denver Brents and Murphie Grace Dye.

The funeral service for Mr. Owen will be Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 3 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel, with Wayne Kuykendall officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3, and burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Cody Sweetland, Don Presnell, Wade Ball, Tracy Lowery, Roger McCurry, and Tim Temple.

Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Garza, Phillip Castleberry, Carey Doss, and Jimbo Champion.
