It is with heavy hearts that the family of Otto Baron announces his passing at the age of 89 years.
Otto was born April 16, 1924 to Adolf and Mary (Rausch) Baron in the McEachern District, south of Kincaid. He attended school at the Lark Hill School until 1933 when the drought sent the family to Quill Lake. Otto attended Bradburn School until age 16. He farmed with his father from 1940-1950 when he married Marie Bohn on August 4, 1950.
Otto bought the Dray business in Quill Lake and never failed to meet the train with his team of horses, Teenie and Tom. He would load the dray wagon and deliver goods around town. When the trains stopped delivering goods, Otto went to work for Campbell’s BA bulk oil. Each day he drove to Moose Jaw for gas, returning in the afternoon to help around the garage. Times changed again and Otto went to work for Parr’s delivering gas to the farmers around Quill Lake.
Otto started work for the Town of Quill Lake in 1960 running the skating rink and functioning as the town constable and maintenance man. However, he always wanted to farm and in 1965, he had the opportunity to farm near Palmer, Saskatchewan.
Hard work was never an obstacle and he and Marie made a wonderful home for their growing family, David (Sandra) Baron, Carol (Louis) Martel, Wayne (Cindy) and Mark. Otto had six grandchildren: Christopher, Jesse, Brittany, Michelle, Aubrey and Austin and six great-grandchildren: Liam, Eddie, Jillian, Jacob, Helena and Eli.
Many of these children enjoyed Grandpa’s creativity. He built a Santa sleigh to be pulled by his horses, the ‘Ottomobile’ half motorcycle-half Volkswagen, and built a float for the parade of two curlers sweeping a rock as the float was pulled.
After retiring from the farm, Otto and Marie moved to Assiniboia where Otto was the ‘Ice Man’ at the curling rink. He was proud of his ice and enjoyed the camaraderie of the curlers. An aneurysm in Otto’s brain changed Otto in 1990 and he never worked after.
Otto spent the last four years of his life in the Ross Payant Nursing Home. The staff there always had a story to tell Otto and they cared for him as they would their own. The family was grateful for this care and the care Dr. Carulei provided to Otto. Their kindness and thoughtfulness was a tremendous source of support.
St. Paul’s United Church hosted the funeral on Saturday, January 11th, 2014 with Reverend Marilyn Leuty officiating. Music ministry was provided by the church choir and organist, Sylvia Coghlin. Arrangements were entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK. Each provided a service of dignity and respect, our heartfelt appreciation for your care and kindness.
