Laura was born on June 28, 1923 in Regina, seventh in a family of ten. Her parents, Joseph and Genevieve Reid had come from Ontario to homestead eight miles northeast of Viceroy. Laura attended school at Sussex and Glen Lea until she completed Grade 8. In 1937 the family packed up and moved to MacGregor and then Katrime, Manitoba where Laura completed her education. In time, the family bought a farm in Gladstone, Man. From there, she went to Winnipeg where she worked at Eatons and National Drugs. On June 29, 1946 she married Orville Dahl and they moved to Viceroy, eventually taking over the Dahl family farm in 1948. This farm has belonged to the family since 1906.
In addition to life as a busy farm wife and mother, Laura expressed her creativity in her many hobbies… knitting, quilting, embroidering, sewing and growing flowers to mention a few. She taught 4H sewing for 11 years and was an active member of the St Olaf Lutheran Church Women’s group and the Sunday School program. When Roger and Holly took over the farm in 1982 Laura and Orville moved into their new home on the outskirts of Viceroy. This is where Laura was able to fully indulge her passion for growing flowers with ever-changing flower beds. Family came first for her. Her children and grandchildren always found welcome hugs and cookies at Grandma’s house. She took the time to play games and read stories with genuine enthusiasm.
Failing health necessitated moves to Westside Court in Assiniboia, then Prairie Villa and finally a short stay in Ross Payant Nursing Home. Laura met each move with courage and good humour.
Special thanks to the staff at Prairie Villa and Ross Payant where Mom was treated with respect and kindness. Thanks also to all the friends who have called, visited and shown support to our family in the loss of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother.
