Joyce Mitchell (nee Carter), passed away March 22, 2014 at age 87 years. Predeceased by husband Jim, siblings: Kenneth and Russell Carter, brothers-in-law, Magnus Watson, Phin Lowe and Marvin Greensides, Gavin, Gordon and Johnny Mitchell, sisters-in-law Mary Carter and Pat Mitchell. Joyce is survived by three daughters: Beth (Bob) Jessop and their children Rob (Erica) and Jaimie; Marion (Ed) Sadlemyer and their family Trevor (Sasha) and their children Zack and Zayden, and Kelsey (Kelly) and their twins Frank and Jesse; and Jean (Guy) Cayer and their children Chad and Kendra, sisters Audrey Lowe, Lenore Watson, Doreen Greensides, sister-in-law, Mary Van Dusen, as well as several nieces and nephews. Winnifred Joyce was born to Kirby and Marion Carter, in Assiniboia, Sk. on June 4, 1926. She attended school in Moose Jaw, then Assiniboia, and took a Secretarial course after high school. She worked as a bookkeeper for Redecopp Garage, at the Post Office, then for Paul Geltner’s Department Store. She married Jimmy Mitchell on July 17, 1948 and they began their life together, farming in the Stonehenge district. Later she worked part-time for Coop Implements before she and Jimmy purchased the Assiniboia Motel. After retiring from the Motel business they went into bee-keeping. Her passion was her family, and her home was the gathering place for family and friends. Her hobbies included curling, square dancing, sewing, bowling, golf, reading, playing bridge and all card games. She was a 4-H Leader, and a member of the United Church Women’s Auxiliary. She and Jimmy enjoyed over 30 years as Members of the Assiniboia Promenaders Square Dance Club. Joyce was the caller’s wife, and together she and Jimmy became the heart of a square dancing era where ever-lasting friendships were formed. Funeral Service was held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in Ross Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK. The Reverend Marilyn Leuty officiated. Tribute was given by daughter, Jean. Pallbearers were grandchildren: Rob, Jaimie, Trevor, Kelsey, Chad, and Kendra. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK. Donations in Memory of Joyce may be made to the SK.
