Irene Nelson passed away April 2, 2022 at age 96 at the Bengough Health Centre. She was born May 28, 1925 on the family farm in the Hart District to Guy and Lulu Hickson. She had four sisters – Hazel, Myrtle, Gladys and Eunice and one brother Donnie. She went to school at Cow Creek and Hart Schools. She married Raymond Nelson in 1941 when she was just 16 years old. They moved to Wells, BC where Raymond worked in a gold mine. A few years later, they moved back to Buffalo Gap to take over the family farm. She helped Raymond grow his gardens and raise hundreds of turkeys and chickens. They had five children and Irene was a wonderful mother. She was an excellent cook and loved to knit, crochet and raise flowers. She always had time to play cards, do puzzles or play games with her grandchildren.
In June 2013, Irene moved to South Winds Manor in Coronach. She loved spending time with all of her friends there. Due to health reasons, on January 2, 2022, she moved to the Bengough Health Centre.
Irene was predeceased by husband Raymond (May 6, 2017), daughter Gail Irene Aust (June 5, 2012), son-in-law Ron Kirby (Nov. 6, 2003).
Irene is survived by her children: Deanna (Jim) Van Alstyne, Janet Kirby, James (Debbie) Nelson and Kim Nelson; son-in-law Ron Aust; grandchildren Clayton, Chad, Nicole, Jennifer, Jarrod, Travis, Zane; Great-grandchildren Tad, Haley, Jace, Aven, Beckett and Charlie; great-great-grandchildren Lincoln, Maeve and Porter.
A Private Family Graveside Service was held on Friday, April 8, 2022 at Buffalo Gap Cemetery, Coronach, SK. Linda Kirby officiating. Donations in memory of Irene can be made to Saskatchewan Cancer Agency 200-4545 Parliament Avenue, Regina, SK S4W 0G3.
