Her family would like to announce the passing of Edith May Wood on June 30, 2013 at the grand age of 95. We are celebrating a long life, well lived. Edith was born February, 1918 in Weyburn, SK to Wallace and Lilian Porter of the Hoath District, east of Willow Bunch, SK. She grew up on the farm along with her brother, Fred. She attended Sharon School. During the Great Depression, she worked as house help on the government plan of $5 per month with a bonus of $2.50 per month if you stayed for 6 months. She married Duwane (Bud) Wood on December 5, 1940. A daughter, Judith, was born in 1942. Bud joined the army in 1943 and went overseas to war in 1944. Edith and Judy lived in Willow Bunch and Moose Jaw during the years he was gone. When he returned, Edith’s parents had retired so they moved to the farm east of Willow Bunch. They had another daughter, Shirley, born in 1947. In 1949, the crops were poor, so they moved to Birch River, MB, where Bud did carpentry work. In 1952 the family moved to Medicine Hat, AB. In 1956 they purchased and moved back to the farm. Edith enjoyed farm life. She grew a large garden, canning and preserving the harvest and also helped Bud with the animals and the farming. Edith was an active member of the United Church and the U.C.W., taking on many of the executive positions. She was also active in the Legion Auxiliary and later was a member of the Legion. Bud and Edith were avid Square Dancers, many weekends were spent travelling to Square Dance Jamborees, from which came many jokes and stories of good times. They also taught Round Dancing and Square Dancing. They retired to Willow Bunch in 1973. Bud passed away in 1988. Edith carried on with her dancing and teaching until her feet couldn’t dance anymore. In 2002, she moved into Westside Court in Assiniboia, SK. She enjoyed her time there, making it her home and the people there her family. Her family remembers her as a strong and loving woman with a deep faith and a love for family and friends.
