Dorothy Lena Swanson

Dorothy Lena Swanson (nee Siggelkow) of Rockglen, SK passed away peacefully on February 16, 2023 at the age of 95. Mom was born January 20, 1928 at the family farm just four miles east of Rockglen. Mom enjoyed the farm life with her pet skunk, Peter, plus all the animals that her Dad raised. Mom attended Constance School for grades 1-11 then she rode her horse seven miles to Fife Lake School to obtain her grade 12. After school, she worked for Art McCutcheon and Elena Nielsen on their farms south of Rockglen. She married Glenn on March 25, 1950. They lived in Gordon Scarrow’s house where they welcomed Valda, then moved to Irvine Engel’s farm south of Fife Lake in 1953. The house had burned down so they lived in the garage until Dad built a new home. Glenda arrived in 1954, followed by Darrell in 1961, who eventually took over the farm when Mom and Dad retired to Rockglen in 1992.

Mom hardly ever sat still and was kept busy cooking and baking with her specialties being plum perogies, apple strudel, jellyrolls, cinnamon buns plus bread and buns. Her basement walls were always lined with canning from meat, fruit, pickles, juices and sauces. She had a green thumb and her vegetable gardens always provided plenty to stock up the freezer and root cellar for the following winter months. She also loved her flower gardens and wherever she lived, they were absolutely beautiful. When she had time to sit, she was found either knitting, crocheting, quilting or crafting. She loved belonging to an art club, united church board and hospital auxiliary. She sold Artex where she spent more money than she made! She and Dad loved to party and the family travelled around the neighborhood playing cards and celebrating many special occasions. There was hardly a dance went by without them gracefully gliding around the floor. They enjoyed travelling a lot and made many special memories and friendships along the way. Her family grew with four grandchildren then as the years passed eleven great-grandchildren soon came along for her to love and adore. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Frances, grandson Stuart Lanoie and brother Gerald Siggelkow. Mom leaves behind her husband of 72 years, Glenn; three children Valda (Jim) Dean of Lisieux, Glenda (Ken) Bemister of N Vancouver and Darrell of Rockglen; grandchildren Geraldene (Justin) Fuhrmann, Erin (Luke) Moore, Ian (Klara) Bemister, and Chris (Nina) Bemister; great-grandchildren Shelby and Mandy Fuhrmann, Taylor and Reese Moore, Kayden, Brooke, Justin, Dominik and Adam Bemister and Mason and Olivia Bemister; her brother Robert (Bob) Siggelkow, her sisters-in-law Eunice Siggelkow and Lynne Siggelkow as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and her special longtime friend Nellie Schafer. We would like to send a big thank you out to her wonderful home care team in Rockglen, Courtney Chase, Melissa Neuman, Rebecca Lamb and Shannon Stewart plus the staff at Grasslands Health Centre in Rockglen and the Coronach Health Centre. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Drop In Center in Rockglen, SK.

Funeral Service for Dorothy will be held July 15, 2023 at 2:00pm in the Rockglen Community Hall, Rockglen, SK. Linda Kirby presiding.
