He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter E. Tate and Mary M. Tate; and his sister, Rebecca J. Kelley.
Sam graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1977. He went on to have a successful career as a Construction Superintendent, retiring from Boone Homes after many years of dedicated service.
He was a longtime member of Super Fine Hunting Club, as well as Applegrove and Deep Creek Hunting Clubs. Sam served on The Board of Directors of the West Hanover Fox Hunters Association, the Northern Virginia Fox Hunters Association, the New Central Fox Hunters Association, and the USO Field Trial. He was a former President of the New Central Fox Hunters Association and the USO Field Trial.
Sam was an avid fox hunter who cherished the time spent in the field with his hounds, friends and fellow houndsmen whom he considered extended family. Sam will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the traditions he helped uphold.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jessica McGraw (Corbin) and Joel Tate (Traci); grandchildren, Eleanor McGraw, Haley Dusenbury, and Conner Dusenbury; sister, Molly Tate; and niece, Christy Crider White and nephew, David Vance.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA 23005.
