He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Moorefield Matthews and is survived by his devoted wife, Cara Lynne Matthews; daughter, Michaela Matthews Wrenn and her husband, Brandon; a sister, Tasia Dawn Matthews; father, Huell W. Matthews, Jr. and a large circle of extended family and friends.
He was the former owner of Mike’s 1’st Video and for the last 16 years he has been with the Virginia State Police Firearms Transaction Center, eventually becoming manager. Mike played football and wrestled in high school and enjoyed cycling, paintball, golf, movies and video games.
The family will receive friends 5 to 7 pm, Sunday, February 5 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 pm, Monday, February 6. Interment will follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
