Joseph George Scileppi, age 77, of Ashland, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy R. Scileppi, parents, Edward and Leonarda (Valenti) Scileppi; father-in-law, Walter P. Edwards, Jr; sister-in-law Laura A. Custalow, and brother-in-law Walter T. Edwards, Sr. Joe is survived by his daughters, Ann J. Downing and Virginia L. Chenault (Roy); cherished granddaughters, Karrie L. Elswick (Nathan), Katherine L. Downing and Emily K. Chenault; great-grandchild, Madilyn R. Elswick and mother-in-law, Virginia E. Christiansen.
Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 21, 1967, in Los Angeles, CA, served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and honorably discharged in October of 1969. Joe earned the Purple Heart Medal and was inducted into the Military Order of the Purple Heart as a Life Member in October of 2016, an organization comprised solely of combat wounded veterans who have earned the Purple Heart Medal on a battlefield during a war. In addition, he received a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal and Campaign Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Rifle Marksmanship Badge M-14, as well as a Presidential Unit Citation, which is the highest unit decoration in the United Armed Forces, awarded for exceptional heroism in combat against an armed enemy. After his service to our Country, Joe worked for and retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as a crew leader, he was a Volunteer Firefighter for Hanover County, VA, Ashland Station #1 and Montpelier Station #8 from 1989 to 2006, was a member of the Ashland Church of God, and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post #10657.
Relatives and friends are invited to Joe's visitation at Nelsen Funeral Home- Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 6-8 PM. A funeral service will be celebrated at Ashland Church of God, 407 Myrtle St, Ashland, VA 23005, on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia Court House, VA 23002, at 1:00 PM.
