Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas A. Holloway and Lena Corker Holloway, and her “assistant parents” Jack and Evelyn Corker Gordon. Joan is survived by her husband, Dr. Frank M. Sasser, Jr.; her son, Harvey Louis Brannan, Jr. (Tabbatha); granddaughter Hailey Thomas, grandson Avery Brannan, stepchildren: Jane Katherine Sasser, Juanita Sasser McHale (Joseph), Frank M. (“Matt”) Sasser, III (Reneé), Mary Sasser Repcheck (Randy), step grandchildren Jennifer Nonnemaker (Joe), William (“Billy”) Tabor, III, Matthew Sasser, Mitchell Sasser, Anna Repcheck, and great step grandson Nathan Grounds.
Joan was born in the present-day parsonage of Oak Grove Wesleyan Church, Montpelier, VA. She graduated as an RN for Johnston-Willis Hospital in 1961 and was on the staff of that hospital for 26 years. She served as school nurse for Elmont Elementary School in Hanover from 1987-1997. Beginning in 1997 she worked at her husband’s office, Montpelier Family Practice serving as head nurse and manager of the practice.
Joan was a life-long member Zion Christian Church, Beaverdam, playing the organ, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, serving as a deaconess, and editing the church newspaper, “The Zionette.”
Joan has now crossed over the river and gone to be reunited with her father, mother and many aunts, uncles and cousins who have been waiting for her on the other side.
A viewing will be held at her home, 17218 Old Ridge Rd. on Saturday, June 8 from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m., and the funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at Zion Christian Church, 16158 Beaverdam School Rd., Beaverdam, VA. A graveside service will immediately follow at the Corker Family Cemetery, Green Acres Road, in Beaverdam. The Rev. Andy Rose and the Rev. Tommy Willcockson will officiate. The family will receive friends at a reception to be held at Zion Christian Church following the graveside service.
