HAMMOND, Gordon, loving and beloved husband, bonus-dad and -grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2023, at the age of 94. Gordon grew up in Ashland, Virginia where he enjoyed family, friends, fishing and boyhood country life at his family’s Luck Farm. He graduated from Henry Clay High School in 1946, obtained a degree in metallurgical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1950, and graduated with an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1957.
Gordon worked as a foreman for Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland, before joining the US Navy in 1952. He served as Ship Superintendent in San Francisco and San Diego shipyards during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserve in 1961.
Following naval service and completion of business school, Gordon resided in Palo Alto, California for many years, working with Varian Associates, the San Francisco Federal Reserve System, and as CIO of California Casualty Insurance Company. He subsequently moved to New York after creating his own stock market consulting company, Market Methodology.
Gordon was a great intellect who also loved music, travel, architecture, woodworking, and boating. He was a creative chef who spent summer vacations in San Francisco cooking schools and loved exploring interesting restaurants.
Although he had lived a cosmopolitan lifestyle, Gordon returned to his roots in 2001, moving to Richmond and reuniting with family. It was there he met Eleanor, his loving wife of nearly 20 years, and gained an extended bonus family and beloved community.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Hammond, Sr. and Cecile Luck Hammond, his sister Jacqueline Hammond Andrews, and his daughter Hilary Todd Hammond.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Eleanor Dickson Campbell, and her children, Sarah “Sally” Campbell (Frank Green), Mary Scott Campbell Soo (Adrian Naylor), Leslie “Dee” Campbell III, and Virginia “Jenny” Campbell (Kevin McLaughlin), and grandchildren, Adrianne and Lindsay Soo, Clare, Phoebe, and Wren McLaughlin. Survivors also include his nephews, Joe Andrews (Bonnie), Bill Andrews (Susan), John Andrews, and his nieces, Cecile Cox (Jim) and Jill Riggs (Bill), and a multitude of great-nephews and great-nieces, and his beloved kitty, Zoe. Gordon and his family have been most grateful for the loving support provided by caregiver and friend, Gale Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at The Fork Church, Episcopal, 12566 Old Ridge Road, Doswell, VA 23047, on Friday, July 14, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Fork Church.
