BRUCE, Baynham Douglas, age 89, passed away June 1, 2014 at The Hermitage at Cedarfield in Richmond, Va. Doug was born August 18, 1924 on a family farm in Caroline County, Va. As a teenager he moved to the "Center of the Universe," Ashland, Va., where he graduated from Ashland High School. He was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Business Administration in 1949. He loved the Hokies and was a supporter of athletics and a football season ticket holder for decades. Doug served in World War II in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer 3rd class. He was a true member of "The Greatest Generation." Doug had a long and successful career in the printing industry. He began his career with Everett Waddey, where he rose to the position of vice president and treasurer. He was then president of Garrett and Massie Printing Company until its merger with The William Byrd Press in the late 1960s. He had a long career with Byrd and held a number of executive positions. He retired in the late 1980s from Byrd as the executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief administrative officer. He was very active in the printing industry over the years, including being a past president of the Printing Industries of the Virginias and teaching seminars nationwide through his affiliation with the Printing Industry of America and the Graphic Communications Association. He was an active community member with the Boy Scouts, Ginter Park United Methodist Church, the Virginia Home for Boys, the Chamberlayne-Laburnum Athletic Association and the Kiwanis Club of North Richmond, where he was a past president. After retirement he moved to Kingsmill on the James in Williamsburg, Va. Doug was an avid golfer and a past member of Kingsmill Golf Club and Hanover Country Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Baynham Bruce and Etta Hicks "Linda" Bruce; and brother, Vernon Mason "Pete" Bruce. He is survived by his beloved "Scanny," Madaline Scanland Bruce; sister, Thelma Bruce Greenwood; daughter, Mary Ellen Cravotta; two sons, B. Douglas Bruce Jr. (Linda) and David Carey Bruce (Skye); 10 grandchildren, Joshua (Jennifer), Catherine (Gabe), Jordan, Linda, Jacob, Brooks, Christopher (Lauren), Sarah, Cali and Davis; four great-grandchildren and scores of nieces, nephews and cousins. Doug will be remembered most for his endearing caring for others. Whether they be family, friends or acquaintance, he was always there to lend a kind word, advice, support or help. The glass was always half full with Doug. He always chose to see the good in others and was such a kind and genuine personality, who will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy. (Rt. 1), Ashland, Va. A private family graveside service will be held Thursday. Doug will be laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, Ashland.
