Sue was born on September 16, 1943 in Fishtrap, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Troy Slone and Carrie (Justice) Coleman. Sue attended Virgie High School, where she won several awards in the Glee Club with her beautiful singing talents. She married Marlin Newsome December 23, 1959. She worked at K-mart as a manager in the camera and jewelry department until they closed. Previously, she owned her own beauty shop in Wellington, Ohio. She was a member of New Beginnings Freewill Baptist Church in Mansfield. A love for children and helping others, Sue was a Girl Scout leader for several years. She was an amazing cook and loved to cook for family and friends. Sue was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, and loved animals, especially her cat, Gizmo.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin (Jon Kellogg) Ashby; her grandchildren, Stephen (Kristi) Ashby, Meagan (Justin) Ashby, Kevin Robertson, and Sara Robertson; her great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Makayla, and Brayden Ashby; her siblings, Vivian (Bob) Childers, Pam (Harold) Gunter, Marcia (Curtis) Wallace, and Dale (Brenda) Coleman; a special friend, Joann Danals; and many other beloved family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father who raised her, Victor Coleman; her husband, Marlin Newsome; her daughter, Heather Blackwood; and her grandmother, Lizzie Slone Justice.
Family and friends may visit on Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Wappner Funeral Directors-Ashland, 308 Claremont Ave., Ashland, Ohio. An additional hour of calling will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023 from 10:00-11:00 am at the funeral home. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am with Pastor Brian Phillips officiating. Sue will be laid to rest in Savannah Cemetery following services. Memorial contributions may be made to New Beginnings Freewill Baptist Church, 2375 Stiving Road, Mansfield, OH 44903.
