A lifelong resident of Ashland, he was born December 20, 1936 to Lowell F. and Mary Ann (Plank) Bender.
Lowell was a veteran of the United States Navy serving with the Naval Construction Batallion.
A licensed professional surveyor since 1963, Lowell was a business partner of Grindle & Bender providing architecture, engineering and surveying internationally until 2020.
Lowell was a City Councilman for Ward I in Ashland for 10 years and was a board member of the Ashland Planning Commission and Appleseed Community Mental Health Center. He was also a member of the Ashland County Airport Authority, the Ashland Railway and the Kiwanis Club.
Lowell was a member of the Ashland Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and was the current Treasurer for Mansfield Church of Christ Brookwood Way.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Sue (Cothren) Bender; his children, Pamela D. (James) Patterson, Lowell James (Patricia) Bender, Barbara Ann (Michael) Markham, Constance B. (Brennan) Galloway and Brad (Alice) Bender; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his sister, Marylin Reep; and his brother, N. Ross Bender.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas G. Bender.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2022 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue, Ashland where a memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. conducted by Pastor Tim Briggs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in Lowell’s name.
