Don was a veteran of the United States Army and a 1956 graduate of Muskingum College. He served as an insurance agent for 50 years for various insurance companies then he became co-owner of Aten and Mennetti Insurance Agency. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as a Deacon for many years.
Don was an avid golfer and was a member of the Ashland Country Club for years where he also served as president. He also enjoyed bowling and playing softball. Don was a member of the Ashland Elks BPO 1360, the Ashland Noon Lions Club, the Young Men’s Business Club as well as serving on numerous boards. His greatest enjoyment was being with his family and watching his grandchildren in their various sporting events.
He is survived by his four daughters, Diane (Gregory) Miller of Avon Lake, Ohio, Jenny (Thomas) Hitchcock of Bay Village, Ohio, Julie (Herbert) Guenther of Ashland, Ohio and Elizabeth (Joseph) Wegas of Avon Lake, Ohio; his grandchildren, Emily Miller and her fiancé Andrew Starr, Hannah Hitchcock, Maxwell Hitchcock, Noah Hitchcock, Sarah (Guenther) Dix and her husband Stewart Dix, Nicholas Guenther, Jackson Guenther, Benjamin Wegas, Catherine Wegas and Joshua Wegas. He is also survived by five sisters-in-law, Sharon (Dean) Bates, Judith Lybarger, Eleanor Wells, Pam (Bill) Jackson and Sherry Burns; and a brother-in-law, Doug Burns.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen (Burns) Aten.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Kevin McClain. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Ashland County Burial Detail. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the church on Saturday.
