Anderson
Alice Anderson, 100 years lovely, of Darrington, WA, died peacefully in the sunshine at her home on July 15, 2013.
Alice was born on March 10, 1913, in Olalla, WA to Austin and Mary Braaten. She was one of nine children, and enjoyed growing up in a close, happy, and hardworking family. After graduating from Olalla High School, Alice went on to work at a Seattle nursing home and later cooked for the Darrington Forest Service in summers.
In 1936, Alice married Sven Anderson. They moved to Darrington in 1941, where they raised their two boys, Kenneth and Dennis, before moving to Oso, WA in 1964. There, Alice spent many happy hours tending her flowers, yard, and vegetable garden, feeding the crows, canning jam, making lefse, baking her amazing cookies and blackberry pies, attending senior luncheons, crocheting, and playing cards with her dear neighbors, friends, and family.
Most of Alice's favorite traditions involved gathering the family together for a meal; particularly Swedish hotcakes or palt. She loved taking the whole family out for Chinese food at the China Doll. The Anderson clan spent many joyful occasions there sharing a meal and filling the banquet room with laughter. It was marginally more challenging for her to find a family member to take her out for lutefisk dinner each winter.
Alice cherished her home in Oso until her health prompted her to move closer to family in Darrington in 2007. In 2009, she moved into the Mountain View Adult Family Home in Darrington, where she received excellent care and companionship from the dedicated staff there, and enjoyed a comfortable home environment. She savored frequent visits from her family, was always up for a card game, and never missed watching her beloved Mariners and Seahawks when they were on tv.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Austin and Mary Braaten; her husband, Sven Anderson; her son, Dennis Anderson; her siblings, Dean Braaten, John Braaten, Clarence Braaten, Bert Braaten, Irene LaVo, and Clara Fagerud.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary Wright and Agnes Stornelli; son, Kenneth Anderson (Jeannie); daughter, in law, Cindy Anderson; grandchildren, Andrew Anderson (Shinobu), Sonya Blacker (Bruce), Jeff Anderson (Kristen), Jason Anderson (Kerie); seven adoring great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including Karen, Nadine, and Susan, who were joyfully dedicated visitors at her Mountain View home.
The family would like to thank Julie Ford at Mountain View Adult Family Home, and her caring staff as well as Dr. Gary Schillhammer. Heartfelt thanks to Angel and Steve. We appreciate all of you and your amazing talent to care for others.
Alice was a special lady, with the gracious ability to enjoy every stage of her life, and the people in it. The Darrington Senior Center provided continued social enjoyment for her in her later years, for which she was grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Darrington Senior Center or the Darrington Clinic Guild.
There will be a graveside service to celebrate Alice's 100 beautiful years of life at the Darrington Cemetery in Darrington, WA on Monday, July 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Please join us in sharing memories of Alice and a meal at the Darrington Community Center dining hall, immediately following the service.
