With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Thomas Bernard Songster on December 22, 2023. He was 83 years old. Tom was born in Exeter, Nebraska, November 22, 1940, the son of Loretta Louise Songster (nee McCormick) and Carl Edward Songster.
Graduating from Doane University, Crete, Nebraska in 1962 with a degree in physical education, Tom later received a Master’s degree from Truman State University. This led to a graduate internship at the University of Utah where Tom completed his Ph.D. in Adapted Physical Education in 1967 at the age of 26.
A former cross country and track athlete, Tom began working with Special Olympics as the first and only volunteer Director for the state of Indiana in 1968. Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder and chair of Special Olympics International, offered Dr. Songster the Director of Sports and Recreation position in 1974. He accepted, moved to Washington, DC and remained there until May of 2008. After 40 years of service, Tom retired as the Senior Vice President, Special Olympics International and Special Advisor to Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Tom played a leading role in the global expansion of Special Olympics. Starting programs in many countries including China, Russia, Egypt, India, Turkey, Argentina, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
His life-long dedication and commitment to children and adults with intellectual disability was a driving force in helping to develop, shape and guide Special Olympics into a leading sports and humanitarian organization worldwide.
Over the years, Tom authored numerous articles, research documents and curriculum related to intellectual disabilities and sports. He received awards and recognition for accomplishments in profession of physical education and sports, including the Paul Kersenbrock Humanitarian Award and the R. Tait McKenzie Award.
In retirement Tom found a new and wonderful adventure, a new born grandson. His daily routine changed dramatically in the most joyous way. And his life would never be the same. For fifteen years, Cole Thomas was a constant source of joy and pride, and love. And throughout the years, Grandpa and grandson could be found any time, any place making memories that will last forever.
Tom is survived by his wife Catherine Songster and son Kevin (Kasey) Songster and beloved grandson Cole Thomas of Arlington, VA. And cousin Alan (Noreen) Songster of Exeter, NE. Tom is also survived by Kevin’s mother, Joyce Songster.
A visitation will be held on January 27th, from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22203. Charitable donations may be made to your local Special Olympics program and Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).
