Beloved opera singer, teacher and artist, Sarah Berg, born in 1922 in Cambridge, MA, passed away on May 29, 2013. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree from New York University and Master’s Degree from Columbia University, she studied opera at the Julliard Master School in New York. She sang with the New York City Symphony Orchestra in concerts and on the radio in New York City, Washington, D.C., Lake Forest and Waugkegan. She taught in secondary schools in New York City for ten years, until 1951 when she married career Naval officer, Commander Frank M. Berg. Commander Berg died in 1988 after 37 years of marriage. She and her husband settled in Arlington in 1957, after various naval tours of duty, where she joined the Interior Decorating Department of Sloan-Mayer. In Virginia, she studied art under artist laureate, John Chapman Lewis, Ralph de Burgos, Elaine Hartley and Louise Craven. She began teaching oil painting in 1959 and continued until 2012. She was an early member of the Art League of Northern Virginia, now called The Art League, FCCA and the Arlington Artists Alliance and has been honored for her distinctive artwork. She is survived by her nephew, Martin Seidler of San Antonio, Texas, and cousins, Sherry Gitlin of Chantilly, Va., Marc Bickoff of Burke, Va. and Norma Bickoff.
