Richard (Dick) Duane Nichols, 82, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2024 in the presence of his wife. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering strength that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
He was born on August 23, 1941 in Columbus, Ohio to Richard Duane Nichols and Josephine Joyner Nichols. His father died when he was three and he and his mother relocated to Eastern Tennessee to be closer to his mother’s family, where he spent his childhood and early teenage years. He and his mother later moved to Northern Virginia and he graduated from Wakefield High School in 1959. He attended George Washington University and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.
Throughout his life, Dick was known for his unwavering commitment to his family and community. As a loving husband to Becky, he shared a bond built on love, respect, and mutual support. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories.
Dick was a devoted father to four children, including Katherine Jean (Colin) Deely, Jo Ann (Nickolaos) Vroustouris, Michael Lee (Martha) Nichols and Richard Duane (Erika) Nichols. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He took great pride in nurturing and guiding his children and grandchildren, instilling in them the values of compassion, hard work, and humility that he held dear.
In his professional life, Dick worked for thirty-seven years in various positions within Accounting and Human Resources for The Washington Post. He approached his work with dedication and passion, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and peers alike.
Outside of work, Dick was involved in the activities of his family and was an engaged community leader who dedicated himself to making a positive impact on the lives of others. He served as President of both the Annandale Lions Club and the Annandale Band Boosters and Packmaster of the Cub Scouts. After his retirement, Dick continued to support his community by volunteering at INOVA Fairfax Hospital for over 20 years. He and Becky also enjoyed traveling and being active and supportive in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives.
Dick will be fondly remembered for his love of family and his ability to find joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a man of remarkable character and integrity who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
There will be a viewing on Wednesday, April 24th at Murphy Funeral Homes in Arlington, VA from 5pm – 8pm. A Mass will be held on Thursday, April 25th at 10am at St. Philip Catholic Church in Falls Church, VA followed by his interment at Columbia Gardens in Arlington, VA.
