Richard "Dick" Lyons (Age 93) Capt., USN (Ret) Of Arlington, VA passed away on September 21, 2015 surrounded by his family. Dick was born on May 13, 1922 in Dayton, OH, and grew up in Detroit, MI. As a youth, he was awarded Eagle Scout on Mackinac Island, MI. Dick also attended the University of Detroit. He is a graduate of Visitation High School in Detroit, where he and three of his classmates decided to head to the Naval Academy.
In 1946, Dick graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and later returned to teach engineering and computer science, first as a single naval officer and then with his family. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and was the recipient of 16 medals including the Legion of Merit.
Dick was stationed in Rio, Lisbon, London, Virginia Beach, Annapolis, Honolulu, Bonn and Washington, DC. He loved golf, tennis and sailing. His love of the sea led him to become an expert Yachtsman and navigator. He was a longtime member of the New York Yacht Club and Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia.
His Brazilian wife, Vera; and his daughters, Monique and Nicole, survive him. Dick and Vera were married in Rio in 1955. He was liked by everyone for his great personality. He will be truly missed. Saudades and until we meet again! Verinha
Funeral services with Full Military Honors were held on May 5, 2015 with a Mass at the Old Post Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery.
