Life-long Arlington resident Mildred Ryland Winston, the wife of the
late Circuit Court Judge William L. Winston, died Jan. 13, 2014,
at home. She was 92 years old.
Mrs. Winston was born Oct. 11, 1921, to Robert Alexander Ryland and
Susan Hutchison Ryland of Arlington at the Hutchison family home in
Manassas, Va. She grew up at her parents’ home on Pershing Drive and
later on Highland Street. Mrs. Winston attended Washington-Lee High
School in Arlington and graduated from Western High School in
Washington, D.C., (now Duke Ellington School of the Arts). She also
graduated from Averett Junior College in Danville and Mary Washington
College in Fredericksburg where she was a member of the Class of 1944.
Judge and Mrs. Winston were married October 1, 1949. She taught sixth
grade at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Arlington. Later, she was
an antique dealer and co-owner of Chesterbrook Consignment Shop in
McLean.
Mrs. Winston was an avid reader. She loved British and Virginia
history, old houses and country roads.
She is survived by her four children, Joseph Ryland Winston of
Richmond, William Littleton Winston Jr. of Washington, D.C., Beverly
Suzanne Winston of Arlington and Ellen Winston Malick of Haymarket.
Survivors also include seven grandchildren and three great
grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Judge
William Littleton Winston.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honor to the Arlington
Historical Society or the Arlington Animal Welfare League.
