Mary Patton Kline, 93, died on April 20, 2015 in Williamsburg, VA where she had lived since March 2002 at Williamsburg Landing. She was previously a resident of Arlington where she had resided since 1942. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Joseph M. Kline, who practiced dentistry in Arlington for 47 years and passed away in 2000. She was also predeceased by two of her sons, Stephen and Joseph, her sisters Jean, Patricia and Ginger and her brother Bud. She is survived by her remaining three sons (and their wives); Bruce (Cathy) of Sydney, Australia, John (Mimi), of Richmond and Greg (Lise) of Williamsburg; a sister, Barbara Patton of Louisville, KY; a sister-in-law, Joan Patton of Gainesville, VA as well as eight grandchildren (Brandon, Kathryn, Matthew, Michael, Ann, Jill, Stephen, and Elizabeth), two great-grandchildren (Josh and Nate), and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was born in Washington, DC. She was a 1942 graduate of Mary Washington College where she received a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Education. While living in Arlington, she was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Arlington Ki-Wives and Washington Golf and Country Club. Mary was a wonderful hostess and cook (especially of impromptu meals for surprise dinner guests). Mary had a well earned reputation as a can-do wife, mother and friend to many (hence, her sobriquet, Mighty Mary or MM). Mary enjoyed bowling and playing bridge. She also was an inveterate shopper, especially for that perfect birthday or Christmas gift. Mary was happiest while providing for and enjoying the company of her extended family and many friends, especially during the holidays. She had an amazing ability to remember dates and events, particularly birthdays and anniversaries. While we are comforted by the memory of many great times with Mary, we will greatly miss the wonderful woman she was.
The family will receive friends at 10 am on Friday, May 8th at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 4000 Lorcom Lane, Arlington. A service to celebrate Mary’s life will begin at 11am. A burial will follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd., Arlington.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mary may be made to either the Young Adult Fund in memory of John Buck, c/o Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic (521 N. Quincy St, Arlington, 22203) or Child Development Resources, P.O. Box 280, Norge, VA 23127.
Mary’s family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Woodhaven Manor at Williamsburg Landing for the tender care and loving support she received during her few years there. There are too many to mention, but you know who you are! Additionally, the family would like to give appreciation and thanks to the caregivers of Heartland Hospice Care of Newport News, Va
