Linden Roark Hill was born in Washington, DC and was a lifetime resident of Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Hill attended Woodlawn Elementary, Stratford Jr. High and Washington-Lee High School and studied at George Washington University.
He had a lifelong interest in spirituality, philosophy and various world cultures. He traveled to India 6 times, developed a strong faith in the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda and the Self-Realization Fellowship at the Golden Lotus Temple, Sathya Sai Baba, and the Arlington Metaphysical Chapel. He focused on Kriya Yoga practices that emphasized the body's 7 chakras, breathing techniques, centering of divine consciousness, and the Oneness of All Souls. Linden could frequently be seen at spiritual meetings, ashrams and downtown DC marches, including the famous March on Washington at the Mall on August 29, 1963 with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He attended this event along with his mother, sister, and his very young nephew.
Linden was a true spiritual leader, a beloved friend and counselor to many. Thousands of people encountered him passing out copies of “Autobiography of a Yogi” by Paramahansa Yogananda and his homegrown metaphysical flyers. He had a keen interest in world events, politics and his family's business, Hill's Nursery in Arlington and Vienna. The nursery had numerous well-known clients during its heyday and boasted greenhouses and beautiful camellia gardens.
Mr. Hill passed on February 26 after a six month battle with colon cancer. He is predeceased by his grandparents Chester and Vina Roark, parents Jerry and Helen Hill, and his sister Ann Streeter. He is survived by his nephew Glen Kuykendall, various cousins, and his brother-in-law Gregory Streeter.
An open-casket viewing is planned for Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 2-6 PM at Murphy's Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington VA 22203. Private interment will follow at a later date at the Hill Family plot on Leesburg Pike in Vienna.
