John Morrell was known as a painter of places, ranging between majestic landscapes and smaller corners of life. He drew much of his inspiration from his connection to Upstate New York and the Hudson River Valley, but also Maine, France and the Washington DC region. His mastery of technique in an array of historical and newer media allowed him to conjure a strong sense of space, light, and personal experience. His later work explored glimpses between buildings, behind hedges, or over a fence, and he once remarked “I am often drawn to what I cannot see.”
His work was exhibited widely and to acclaim, regionally, nationally and internationally, earning him a distinguished reputation as a landscape artist. His paintings are included in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the United States Postal Museum, Washington Children’s Hospital, and dozens of corporate and private collections. Throughout his career he contributed extensively to the art world not only as a professor and mentor, but also as a frequent judge, speaker, and exhibition curator and designer. His many distinctions include fellowships and a residency in 2017 at the University of Oxford.
A native of Albany, New York John Morrell earned his BS at Georgetown University in 1973. His major was Psychology but by the time he graduated he had found his calling as a painter.
