In Memoriam: John Bradley McKelvey, JR (July 9, 1949 – March 5, 2023)
John Bradley McKelvey, JR (AKA Brad) – was a soul mate, best friend, wing man, collector, and loving father. He was also a gourmet vegan cook, a photographer/archivist for the Cultural Center for Social Change, and a map researcher for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Learning Center prior to the Museum’s opening. Some of his photographs are published in The Cost Of Freedom: Voicing A Movement After Kent State 1970 (May 2020); “Peoples’ Voice Café: Leading Horizontally & Collectively For More Than Forty Years in Leadership of the Commons: How Collaboration is Changing the Governance of Shared Resources and Services Around the World (September 2021); and a forthcoming book titled: A Grassroots Leadership and Music For Social Change Primer For Educators, Organizers, Activists, & Rabble-Rousers (October 2023). One of his maps was published in Freedom Is A Constant Struggle: An Anthology Of The Mississippi Civil Rights Movement (December 1999; Reprint November 2022). His map research and cartography is also acknowledged in Days Of Remembrance April 18 – 25, 1993: Fifty Years Ago, Revolt Amid the Darkness, the Planning Guide for Commemorative Programs, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Brad was born in Rochester, NY. In 1967 he moved to the DC metropolitan area and remained there until he took his last breath. His parents, Anne and Jack McKelvey are deceased. He is survived by his long-time partner, Susan (Susie) J. Erenrich; his sons, Daren and Evan Gluck McKelvey; his daughter-in-law, Jessica Gloria McKelvey; his grandsons, Jack Evan and Charlie John Michael McKelvey; his sister and brother-in-law, Trisha and Craig Souder., and his niece, Megan Souder.
