oe was born in Potacasi, North Carolina on December 27, 1908, son of George and Lucy Grizzard. He was 105 years old. He was married to the late Mamie Charles and Mildred Pinkstaff. He resided in Arlington County since 1945 and worked for the Arlington County Property Yard for more than 27 years. He grew up on the Roanoke River and built a houseboat and lived for a year floating along the river where he loved to hunt and fish. He truly loved his hunting dogs.
He was inducted into the Army for a one year enlistment in 1940 and was due to muster out on December 7th, 1941. Due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor that day, he remained in the Army until after the end of WWII. He saw action all over Europe and was part of the invasion forces at Utah Beach on June 6th, 1944. He was one of the last servicemen who left the Siege of Bastogne which was part of the Battle of the Bulge. He drove trucks during the war with a caisson attached, not unlike his grandfather who did the same during the Civil War. Joe had been a Mason for over 53 years
He is survived by nieces Bernice M Anglin and Ursula McGhee, both of Arlington. Many great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews were part of his extended family.
We will all miss his deep voice and the hours on end he would spend telling stories of his life. He saw so much change during his life and loved to share it with whomever would listen. He will be missed by so many who were touched by our “Uncle Joe”. Rest in Peace and God Bless you for your service to your country.
Services will be held at Arlington Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington VA, on Monday March 10 at 9:00AM, with interment to follow at National Memorial Park, Falls Church.
