James Howard Nokes
August 30, 1929 – April 26, 2022

James “Buck” Nokes of Arlington, VA passed away on April 26, 2022. Born in Georgetown to James Edward Nokes, Jr and Katherine Kane Rittue Nokes, raised by his grandparents James Edward Nokes, Sr., Minnie Dora Hulien Nokes and his older sister Dorothy Lee Nokes Trower.
He went to work at 14 and after serving 3 years in the US Coast Guard returned to spend almost 70 years in the restaurant business. He started as a teen sweeping floors to eventually become vice president of sales and marketing at Washington Beef company. He then worked for Ehrlich Poultry, for 20 years A.M. Briggs, and most recently at The Capital Meat Company.
He was a proud member and past president of the Georgetown Boys Club (now called Boys & Girls Clubs-Washington Jelleff Recreation Center). He was also a member of Washington Golf & Country Club since 1970 where he won many a Mosby Cup putting trophy.
He will be missed by his wife of 62 years, Florice P. Nokes, children James H. Nokes, Jr., Rebecca (Jason Merchant), nieces Cynthia Trower, Robyn Trower, Sharon Richardson-Militano and nephew Ray John's.
Visitation is from 6 - 8 pm on Tuesday, May 3 and a service will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 4 at Murphy Funeral Homes, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22203. Interment to follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, VA.
