Died April 14, 2015 in Naples, FL. Born in New York, NY, George spent his early years in Queens, NY; Oak Ridge, TN; and Cheverly, MD. He graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC and St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY.
After university, George entered the United States Marine Corps and commanded a rifle platoon and rifle company with the 9th Marines in Vietnam. In addition to assignments in the 7th, 6th, and 5th Marines, he served as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment on the USS Shangri-La (CVA 38) and as an instructor at the US Army's Center for Special Warfare.
George spent the last 14 years of his Marine Corps career as a Russian specialist, including assignments as an Assistant Naval Attache at the US Embassy in Moscow, USSR, and as Director of Portal Monitoring in Votkinsk, Russia, for the On-Site Inspection Agency.
He received master's degrees from North Carolina State University in political science and the University of Southern California in international relations. George also is a graduate of the National War College and the Institute for Soviet and East European Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirken, Germany.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, George worked as a Vice President of Raytheon Technical Services Company and as President and CEO of ArmorGroup North America.
In recent years, George devoted himself to researching and writing about the Civil War Gettysburg campaign.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia; his daughters Catherine Connell McSherry and Elizabeth Connell; and his grandsons Maximilian and George McSherry.
