Gary Scott Ryan

Gary Scott Ryan, 55, died July 14, 2023, fighting with dignity and determination against multiple health conditions. He died with the support of an army of loyal family and friends, who were fortunate to enjoy his good-natured and amiable personality. Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Ryan. He is survived by his loving children, Tyler and Trevor Ryan; his father, Raymond Ryan; his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Colleen Ryan; and his sister, Stacey Ryan. Gary is also survived by four nieces and nephews, Mackenzie and Connor Ryan, and Amanda and Kelley Buscio.

Gary was a proud alumnus of Toms River High School North (1986) and James Madison University (JMU, 1990). He played multiple sports competitively and was a well-liked teammate who always exhibited a positive spirit on the field. He was an avid sailor and boater, who taught many young kids how to sail and who enjoyed many days and nights with family and friends on the Barnegat Bay and Toms River. Gary was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), earning this qualification shortly after college. He had a successful career as a CPA with then Price Waterhouse, followed by success as a financial services recruiter. He also enjoyed supporting the good work of the Specially Adapted Resource Clubs in Northern Virginia.

Gary enjoyed watching his sons play multiple sports and spending time with them, especially on the golf course. He also enjoyed seeing any JMU athletic team compete, watching the New York Yankees. Gary was a loyal Washington Commanders football fan and attended many games. He enjoyed cooking (and not just pork roll or Steak-umms!), trying to stump family and friends with mostly inane trivia, and just sitting around talking about the old times with anyone nearby. He loved Bruce Springsteen--and even met him in Red Bank. Springsteen concerts, of which he saw many, were mostly a special opportunity for Gary to be with his friends, talking about dreams and how to make them real. He loved his frequent visits to New Jersey and Florida to visit family. Gary also prized opportunities to organize and attend social networking events in Virginia, where he was known and beloved by so many people whose lives he enriched with his humor and kindness. His zest for life and love for people were unmistakable and infectious and will be his enduring legacy.

A Memorial Gathering with his mother, Judith Ryan, will be offered on Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 1pm to 5pm at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River, New Jersey.
