David N. Walters of Arlington, Virginia, died September 7, 2022, in Arlington, VA. He was 79 years old. Mr. Walters was born in Connersville, Indiana, February 23, 1943, the son of Josephine Newkirk Walters and Hugh Maxwell Walters.
Mr. Walters graduated from Connersville High School in 1961, and from Hanover College in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968, after which he traveled in Europe for several months. Mr. Walters began his working career as a field auditor with the A. C. Nielsen Co., in Chicago, in 1969. In September of that year, he accepted a position with the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service in Washington, D. C. In 1978, Mr. Walters received an award from President Carter for government improvement. He remained at USDA for 26 years, retiring in 1995. His wife Linda was also employed by USDA during the same period.
Mr. Walters was a volunteer leader in the Boy Scouts for many years, most recently as an assistant scoutmaster, and was active in his neighborhood civic association. He did volunteer work for the Smithsonian Institution, The American Cancer Society, the U. S. Olympic Organizing Committee, and the Presidential Inaugural Committee. In the late 1980’s, Mr. Walters published two books about Connersville and Fayette County history from material written by his father, the late H. Max Walters. Mr. Walters was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arlington.
Surviving are sons Timothy (m. Jennifer) Walters of Charlottesville, VA and Jason Walters of Arlington, VA and sister, Rosamond Westmoreland of New York City, NY. Mr. Walters’ wife Linda and his parents preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held on October 1, 2022, at 4:00 pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arlington, VA. Charitable donations may be made to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) and the American Cancer Society.
