He married Martha Madden Swanson in 1967. He is survived by his two children, Michael (Dottie) and Sarah, and his nephew Christopher (Christina) and niece Anneliese. He was preceded in death by his brother George.
He grew up on Long Island, attended Rutgers University, graduating from Adelphi University in 1965. He earned a MA from Colgate University, and an MBA from Virginia Tech. He worked at Stony Brook University, Piedmont Technical Institute, George Mason University and retired from Georgetown University.
An avid sports fan, he played lacrosse at Rutgers, and refereed youth soccer for twenty years. He actively supported Georgetown sports.
Arrangements are being handled by Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA. Visiting hours will be held July 25 from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. A Mass is planned for 10:30 on July 26 at Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown, Washington, DC 20007. Visitation will begin at 9:30 and a reception will be held after the Mass in McKenna Hall at the church.
