It is with profound sadness that the family of Charles “Charlie” Barnes, Sr. of Arlington, VA, announces his passing on July 31, 2024. Born October 10, 1931, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judith E. Barnes; his children Kathryn E. Hines, Deborah A. Moore, and Janet L. Wahl; his parents William and Josephine Barnes; siblings John Barnes, Josephine Clapper, Evelyn Mittendorf, William Barnes, Jr., Ginny Polen, Anna Farrar, Marie Menefee and Richard Barnes.
He is survived by his children, Charles H. (Terry) Barnes, Jr., Linda J. (Bill) Gibbs, John W. (Laurie) Barnes, Karen L. (Peter) Buer; also surviving are 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and siblings George Barnes, and Doris McDonald.
Charlie served in the United States Army and received a National Defense Medal for his service in the Korean War. A longtime resident and business owner in Arlington County, he was a craftsman best known for his remodeling and renovation skills. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, golf, and bowling. He is remembered fondly for his quick wit, animated storytelling, beautiful singing voice and his bountiful vegetable garden.
Services will be held 12:00-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 6, at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA. with Interment immediately following at Columbia Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN. 38105-1905.
