Carrie Elizabeth Yeatts Barbee, age 103, widow of Ashby W. Barbee, was born December 16, 1918 in Dry Fork, Virginia, to Benjamin Reaves Yeatts and Madie Jones Yeatts. She grew up on a farm in Pittsylvania County. She attended Whitmell School, Averett Junior College, and Farmville State Teacher's College (now Longwood University). She graduated in the Class of 1939 with a B.A. in Elementary Education. Her 32 years as an educator included teaching at schools in Alleghany and Pittsylvania County, the City of Harrisonburg, and Fairfax County.
Carrie married Ashby W. Barbee on August 20, 1949. They were married for 37 years, until his death in 1986. Carrie moved to Arlington in 1951, where she resided for over 60 years. She enjoyed reading, baking, gardening, exercising, traveling, and spending time with her family. She was known for her kindness and hospitality. She was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Arlington and served on the Pastoral Care Committee, in the Nursery, and taught Women's Bible Study classes. Carrie moved to the Bridgewater Retirement Community in 2014, residing in Assisted Living, and later, in the Huffman Health Center in Serenity House until her death on August 19, 2022.
In addition to her parents and husband, Carrie was predeceased by five sisters, Ruth Hall, Ollie Jennings, Margaret Boswell, Anna Mebane Yeatts, and Patsy Hubbard; and four brothers, Coleman, William, Harold, and John Yeatts. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Barbara B. Dawson, and son-in-law, Thomas F. Dawson.. Survivors include two children, Thomas A. Barbee (Gail), Martha B. Waltz (Daniel), two step-daughters, Betty B. Cook (Harvey Davis), and Doris B. Brady (Edward); eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren, 16 step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visiting hours will be 6-8 pm on Sunday, August 28 at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22203. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 am by Pastor Judith Fulp-Eikstaedt at National Memorial Park Cemetery, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. A Memorial Service will follow at 12 noon at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5533 16th St. N, Arlington, VA 22205.
The family would like to thank Connect Home Care, Bridgewater Retirement Community, Home Instead, and Legacy Hospice for their skillful and loving care.
