1927 – 2013
Ashton “Buddy” Owen passed away following a valiant struggle with cancer on July 14, 2013. He was born on August 16, 1927 to Ashton F. Owen and Virginia Owen of Arlington, Virginia. He was a life-long resident of Arlington County and attended Washington and Lee High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1950 he married Dorothy Baldozier of Arlington County. They later divorced. He was a Master Plumber and spent many years maintaining the water and sewer systems at the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. He was a life member of Plumbers Local # 5.
Buddy was also a life member of the Arlington County Volunteer Fire Department working out of the Ballston Station #2 fire department. He was also a 36th Degree Mason in the Arlington, Virginia Lodge.
Buddy was especially proud of his son Michael and his accomplishments. He beamed with pride over the achievements of his two stalwart United States Marine grandsons Matt and Mike.
Buddy was loved and admired by all who knew him. His droll sense of humor and his frugality are legend. His death leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled. We look forward to the day that we will meet again.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ashton F. Owen and Virginia Owen, brothers, Robert Joseph Owen and Donald F. Owen and sisters, Virginia “Snookie” Lackey, Helen Elizabeth Walker, Louise Catherine Easterlin, and Gertrude Ann “Judy” Walker. He is survived by his son Michael Owen of St. Petersburg, Florida, grandsons Mathew Michael Lee Owen and CAPT Michael Francis Ashton Owen USMC of Huntington Beach, California, brother Stanley Owen (Anna Lynn) of Niles, Ohio, many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and the love of his life for the past 23 years, Sadie Joy of Las Vegas, Nevada.
A Memorial Visitation Service will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, Virginia on Friday July 19, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00. A private family funeral will be held at a later date and Buddy’s ashes will be solemnly scattered on the family burial plot in Mt. Olivet Methodist Church cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Fairfax Hospital and Capital Care Hospice Center, for their loving and kind care of Buddy during his final days.
