Tom was born November 27, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan, the 4th of 5 children to parents John Edmund Fraser and Rita Fitzpatrick Fraser. As a child he was always outdoors with his siblings and neighbors. He enjoyed playing baseball, and he discovered his deep love for hockey. He spent most winter days of his youth playing pond hockey in his backyard. He loved being on the lake, water skiing and boating— a love that like his love for hockey, was lifelong.
After graduating from St. John High School in Jackson, Michigan where he played on the football team, he attended Michigan Tech University. He loved to tell the story about how at one point in college he discovered he was such a savvy bridge player that he considered ditching school to travel the nation and hustle the professional bridge circuit. He stayed the course though, and in 1971 attained his degree in Chemistry. Upon graduating he escaped the harsh Michigan winters for sunny Texas, where he could play golf year round.
Tom spent his first decade in Texas working at TXI. In 1981 he met his wife Becky while she was on a canoe trip in New Braunfels with mutual friends. In 1983 they married. That same year he started Fraser Mining & Industrial Supply. He loved building his business and took great pride in his company’s excellent reputation in service to the mining industry across Texas and the south central United States. His friends appreciated his keen business knowledge and he was always there to advise them in times of need.
In 1985 his daughter Meredith was born, followed by his son Michael in 1987. He was a devoted father.
He was also a devoted servant leader to his community. There were few boards or committees in Mansfield or in his Walnut Creek Community that he didn’t at one point serve. Most notably he served on the Mansfield City Council from 1991-1994.
Tom had a passion for coaching hockey. He coached at Mansfield High School, Irving High School, and the University of Texas in Arlington. His enthusiasm for hockey extended beyond coaching— he was also an avid Dallas Stars fan and he was by their side cheering them on until the end.
Tom was larger than life and as much as he loved to work and serve he loved a good party even more. He left an impact in many places & on many people. He will be greatly missed.
Tom is survived by his wife Becky, daughter Meredith, son Michael, sisters Pat Bentley and Colleen Klotz, brother Matt Fraser, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his Father John, Mother Rita and brother Jef.
A celebration of life will be held on July 10th from 11:30am - 2:30pm at The Vault, 2300 Matlock Rd, Ste 21, Mansfield, TX 76063.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Dallas Stars Foundation.
