Thelma Ann (Williams) Campbell was born January 28, 1939, to Albert and Leona (Prentiss) Williams in Phillipston, MA. Thelma passed away peacefully Sunday, August, 28, 2022, in Grand Prairie, TX, surrounded by her loving family.
Thelma was a member of the Freetown Road Church of Christ where she was baptized on January 5, 1969. She taught Sunday school at this church. Thelma and her husband, Roy, ensured their three daughters knew God and attended church. It is through their example and teaching, all three daughters became Christians.
Growing up in Massachusetts, there were 14 children in her family. They had very little resources, and Thelma helped care for her siblings at a very young age. Thelma was known by family and friends as “Bunny;” a nickname her older brother gave her. After the family home burned down, they moved to upstate New York.
It was in upstate New York, Thelma met a handsome soldier named Roy Campbell through a friend who happened to be Roy’s sister. On September 26, 1959, Roy and Thelma married in Whitehall, NY. They moved to Amarillo, TX in 1963 and then to Grand Prairie, TX in 1966, where they raised their family.
Thelma enjoyed cooking, keeping a clean house, sewing (she made many of the girls’ dresses), caring for Roy, her children, and grandchildren. Regarding cleaning house, many of her friends said, “You can eat off Thelma’s floors; they are so clean.” Thelma was a fantastic cook! Her dumplings and stew, salmon patties, apple pies, and the entire Thanksgiving and Christmas meals were enjoyed by friends and family. Yes! There was competition on who got the last of the stew.
It could not be easy raising three girls, but Thelma did so in a loving and forgiving manner. There were disagreements, but Thelma’s unconditional love for her family made it easy for her to forgive. It can be seen how much she loved children in the pictures where she is always smiling caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved her family!
Thelma is preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy, her parents, brothers – Albert, Leslie, Harold, Douglas, and Donald, sisters – Violet, Norma, Marion, Jeanette, Barbara, and Shirley.
To cherish her love and memories, Thelma is survived by: Daughters – Barbara Newman and husband Mike, Bonnie Wangler and husband Joe, Carol Wagoner and husband Gary; Brothers – Louis Williams of South Carolina and Raymond Williams of Massachusetts; Grandsons – Shane Church (Jenn), Josh Church (Marta), and Jeff McCutchen (Nancy). Thelma also has ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
