Sylvania Ann “Viney” Miller, the third of four siblings, was born to James Dave Miller and Mary Sylvia Edwards, in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 26, 1939. At an early age, Sylvania was baptized and confirmed at Holy Ghost Church, New Orleans.
Viney’s elementary education began at Holy Ghost School; she completed her high school studies at Xavier University Preparatory in 1957, then attended the New Orleans School of Business.
Viney relocated to Lake Forest, IL where she worked at Lake Forest Hospital. In 1963 she began working for the Department of Defense (DoD). In 1965 she returned to New Orleans, continuing what would be her 34-year career with DoD. Her final position was as an Inventory Management Specialist with Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion & Repair, USN (SUPSHIP), Naval Support Activity, retiring in 1997. After retirement, Viney worked for Catholic Charities and Home Instead.
Viney was very artistic, as it showed through her sewing, ceramics and drawings; she was also a sharp dresser. She enjoyed her CDM coffee, a good snowball, boiled crabs, and making her famous yellow cake with chocolate icing. She also enjoyed going to matinees, watching westerns, psychological thrillers, and Judge Judy.
She was a longtime member and treasurer of the Penny Pinchers Savings Club, which originated after high school; lector and minister of holy communion at St. Katherine Drexel Church (formerly Holy Ghost).
She was godmother to Vanessa Skinner and Dr. Zelda Pittman.
In May 2019, Viney suffered a major stroke, surviving with her beloved dog Nola. She was diligent during her recovery period. In November 2019, her family relocated her to Arlington, TX. In March 2020 she became a resident at Mansfield Medical Lodge Nursing Home where she resided until her passing on December 28, 2023.
Viney was preceded in death by her parents, James Dave Miller and Sylvia Edwards Miller, sister Patricia Sylvia Miller, nephew Aaron James Miller, and sisters-in-law, Joann Miller and Arleen Miller.
Her legacy is forever embedded in the hearts of those she loved and who loved her; daughters Yvette Miller Price and Nicole Michelle Miller, son-in-law Warren Jason Price, grandchildren Xavier Isaiah Price and Zaria Nicole Price; siblings James Edward Miller and Arthur Dave Miller; nephew and niece Arthur Joseph Miller, and Raquel Miller; cousin Veronica McCampbell, along with a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Sylvania will be held Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Moore Bowen Road Funeral Home, 4216 South Bowen Road, Arlington, TX 76016.
