Suresh was born in Ghazibad, India on June 6, 1945, to Murari Lal Sharma and Basanti Devi. He was one of two siblings and was a proud older brother to Ramesh.
Suresh cultivated his love of learning at a very early age and earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in India. During the course of his studies, Suresh married the love of his life, Santosh Sharma on June 18, 1967, beginning a wonderful journey that lasted more than 54 years and created thousands of loving and heartfelt memories.
After their marriage, they were soon blessed with two loving children, Sarita, born in 1968 and Arvind, born in 1970. In 1969, Suresh left India and moved to Waltham, MA to pursue his Ph.D. in Physics at Brandeis University, with his family following soon thereafter.
After receiving his Ph.D. in Physics in 1976, Suresh accepted a position at the University of Texas at Arlington and the family moved to Texas. He spent over 40 years pursuing his interests in research, in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and cultivating relationships with his colleagues and students. Professor Sharma was known as an innovative Physicist who made very significant contributions to the field, receiving many scientific awards. He published numerous articles in highly-rated journals, obtained several patents and participated in and organized international and national conferences. Professor Sharma achieved status as a full Professor in 1990, and served as Director of the Center for Nanostructured Materials and Director for the Center for Positron Studies.
While he always exhibited his passions for learning and education, Suresh actively pursued other interests later in his life. He loved his daily walks with his beloved Santosh, spending time with their friends, and traveling the world. After both of his children left for college, his love for music blossomed as he started to learn and eventually mastered the harmonium. The harmonium coupled with his love for bhajans culminated in the formation of a music group that frequently met to enjoy music and song. Suresh also played the harmonium and sang bhajans regularly at the DFW Hindu Temple where he was a lifetime member. However, he often expressed that the joy, happiness, and fulfillment he found spending time with his grandchildren was unparallelled.
Suresh selflessly dedicated his life to his family, friends and colleagues, always providing love, encouragement, support, smiles and a bellowing laugh that filled every room. He lived life to the fullest, finding true happiness in everything he did and bringing joy to everyone who had the fortune of crossing paths with him.
Suresh is survived by the “love of his life”, Santosh; his daughter, Sarita Sharma Louys and her husband, Donmiguel Louys; his son, Arvind Sharma and his wife, Virginia Sharma; and his five cherished grandchildren, Aryana Louys, Dhilan Vilas Louys, Neelan Sharma, Kadin Sharma and Alexandria Matatrejo.
