Stephen Ansel Nutt, age 61, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Arlington, Texas. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on June 27, 1963 and was raised in Nashville, Arkansas, Texarkana, and Richardson, Texas.
Stephen was a very talented musician. As the son of a piano teacher, Stephen had been around music his entire life. While his first musical training was on piano, it was the discovery of his uncle's Beatles record collection that sparked a life-long enthusiasm for playing guitar, singing and writing songs.
Stephen enjoyed the thrill of playing along with the record and came to the conclusion at the age of 16 that music would be his vocation. One year after graduating from UNT with his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies, Stephen returned to pursue a Master's of Music degree in classical guitar performance. He began teaching while completing his post graduate studies, serving as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at UNT.
Since that time, Stephen has taught guitar as well as music theory, music appreciation and Jazz Ensemble at Tarrant County College and El Centro College. He also taught guitar lessons at Dallas College at both Brookhaven and Northlake campuses. In addition to performing solo classical engagements, Stephen led and composed music for his bands "A Thousand Words" and "Fury III." He also played guitar with 60's British Invasion Band "Revolution 9", Top 40 Cover Band, "Darkest Before Dawn", and vocal jazz trio, "Independently Blue."
Stephen is preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Hackworth; and his father, Victor L. Nutt, Jr.; step-father, Don Hackworth; as well as his beloved grandparents, Virginia and Lloyd Nowell.
To cherish his memory, Stephen leaves behind his brother, Vic Nutt (Carol); step-brothers, Alan and Patrick Hackworth; aunt, Anne Brown; uncles, Jim Nowell (Ann) and Joe Nowell (Lois); nephews, Lee Nutt (Megan) and Christopher Nutt; nieces, Natalie Carroll (Ryan) and Melissa Van Scyoc (Cody); 4 great-nephews; and 4 great-nieces. Stephen loved all his cousins and was especially close to his cousin, Byron Brown. Being 4 months apart in age, they were lifelong friends and were more like brothers than cousins. Friendships were deeply cherished by Stephen and he was blessed to have many, especially in the music community, where his legacy lives on.
Stephen was a friend to many people and to many cats!
A memorial service to honor Stephen's memory will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Fielder Church - South Oaks Campus, located at 5925 U.S. 287 Frontage Road in Arlington.
Because Stephen has previously supported international children in need, the family asks that donations be sent to Compassion International at: compassion.com
