Sharon L. Shelton went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 6, 2021. She was born May 6th, 1936 in Muskegon, MI. Her family moved to Weslaco, TX in 1947. As a child, she grew up in Port Isabel, TX, where her dad bought and operated a 1,000 ft. fishing pier. Later, she graduated from Texas Woman’s University in 1958 and married the love of her life Bill Shelton the same weekend. Together, they spent the next 63 years of marriage residing in Grand Prairie, TX.
As a young microbiologist, Sharon began her professional career at the Dallas County Health Department. After a brief time with the health department she spent the next 38 years employed at UT Southwestern, formerly the University of Texas Health Science Center. During her career with UT Southwestern, she was employed in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Department. Her tenure included training numerous physicians about infectious disease and co-authoring several articles with the American Society for Microbiology.
In her off time, Sharon and Bill would spend summer weekends at Possum Kingdom Lake where they enjoyed time with family and friends. Also, Sharon was quite a traveler where she loved going to Las Vegas, Shreveport, Hawaii and Europe with family. She was also a master of the slot machines.
In service to our Lord and Savior, Sharon was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie. Sharon was very active in her community where she coordinated and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. In addition to other acts of service, her volunteer work continued in the Volunteer Auxiliary at the DFW Medical Center and Baylor All Saints Medical Center.
In her later years, Sharon enjoyed reading, watching old movies, Wheel of Fortune, Survivor and Dancing with the Stars. She shared her love of music with her three granddaughters, Tori, Allison and Paula by teaching them piano when their patience would allow and sharing her eclectic music collection with them. Sharon absolutely adored them as they truly were the light of her life.
She will always be remembered for how she would get tickled at the smallest things and how infectious her sweet, little laugh was. During this recent time of mourning, many friends have come together to offer their condolences. Adjectives to describe Sharon include kind, sweet, gentle and loving. In the end, Sharon’s faith and love of her family carried her through her physical challenges and she fought her illness bravely. As a family, we lost a wonderful, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be truly missed.
Before being called home to our Lord, Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Alice Fleming. She is survived by her loving husband, Bill Shelton, children Dale Shelton (Spouse Wendy), Cindy Nolan (Spouse Andrew), three grandchildren, Tori Shelton and Allison and Paula Nolan. She is also survived by two brothers, Edward and Mike Fleming. Funeral services will be graveside at 10:00 am, Friday, March 26th, 2021 at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, TX.
