Sarah H. Coon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the age of 75. Sarah was born August 6, 1937 in Henderson, Texas, the daughter of the late James Hugh and Lena Fae Hawthorne.
Sarah’s three younger siblings, the late James Hugh Hawthorne III (Malinda); surviving sister, Nancy Fae Benson (Bruce) and brother, Dr Loyd Furman Hawthorne (Brenda) were born in different Texas cities as their father worked in the construction industry. For a few years the Hawthorne’s lived in Waco, Texas. Sarah attended Brook Avenue Elementary School, where she was double promoted to a higher grade level due to her outstanding academic abilities. Finally, the family moved to Port Neches, Texas where Sarah attended both junior and senior high schools. She graduated at 16 years of age in 1954 from Port Neches High School, garnering honors as both the youngest and the highest academically rated girl in her class. Before getting married, she attended Baylor University, in Waco Texas through her sophomore year. In May, 1956, she married Alen W. Coon. In 1993, Sarah moved from Arlington, Texas to Corpus Christi after the death of her husband, an Air Force Major; her companion on many adventures from Alaska to Maine, including a two-year hiatus in the Philippine Islands. Once in Corpus, Sarah began working for the Corpus Christi Independent School District in the Human Resources Department. Once her knowledge and abilities were recognized, she became the certification officer for the District where she remained until she retired in January of this year.
