Ron graduated from Abilene High School and received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington. He married Laura Horton on February 22, 1974.
His father was in the Air Force so he lived in many different states growing up.
Ron had a lifelong career in architecture starting with HKS Architects.
He also worked for Starnes Consulting, Carter-Burgess, and Freese & Nichols before finishing his career at Schrickel, Rollins and Associates in Arlington.
Ron worked on a wide variety of projects in several states, most notably New York City and Minneapolis. However, when he finished his career in Arlington he designed three projects he was most proud of.

Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, Laura; his sons, The Reverend Alan Horton(Holly), and Anthony Horton; and his daughter Michelle Sutton(Delmar). He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Gathings(Max). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Naomi Speed Horton and Harold F. Horton; his brothers Franklin W. Horton and Robert Lee Horton.
