October 21, 1930 – December 17, 2020
Granbury, Texas
Born and lovingly raised in Hondo Texas, Robert Carle was the son and only child of Barnitz and Gertrude Reily Carle. They were Methodists and provided a wonderful environment for his upbringing. Robert honored his father and mother all of their lives.
Encouraged by his parents, Robert was active in the Boy Scouts, rising to the level of Eagle Scout. While on a business trip to New York City years ago, Robert lost his wallet. A year later, the wallet was returned through the US Mail with only his Eagle Scout card included. He was so happy.
After graduating from Trinity University in San Antonio and serving two years in the US Army, Robert began a career in public schools. He was a teacher, a coach, a school principal, and a superintendent in several West Texas school districts. During this time period, he also completed a master’s degree from Sul Ross University.
While serving in the Army, he was honored with the opportunity to teach reading to soldiers who had missed that part of their education. He enriched their lives.
The bulk of his career was spent as sales representative, sales manager, and national sales manager for McGraw-Hill Book Company in school adoption states. He was esteemed by his colleagues, seen as a mentor, and known as a leader with high expectations.
After Robert’s retirement in 1995, he continued his passion for learning, teaching and researching, especially with Texas history. For four years he served as the leader of the Pecan Plantation Breakfast Club where he shared his own research, as well as that of others, and his fascination for storytelling. He loved a funny story, and he loved making others laugh. He loved life.
Family history was important to Robert. He was proud that his ancestors were in Texas during the time of the Texas Republic, and that his heritage included service with the Texas Rangers. He loved teaching that history to all his grand-children. They loved Grandpa and they loved his stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his darling daughter Frances Ann Carle Brewster.
He is survived by his wife Marlene, married 47 years, and survived by daughters Barbara Bhavana Carle Lymworth, Janet Carle Marshall, Jamie Dea Inman, and son Robert Coleman Carle. He is also survived by 11 grand-children and 13 great-grand-children.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Moore Memorial Gardens, 1219 North Davis Street in Arlington, Texas 76012.
A livestream will also be available on the Moore Funeral Home and Moore Memorial Gardens Facebook page.
Robert would be honored by a gift to the Marfa Texas ISD technology fund for online learning. See www.techthehallsmarfa.com
