Quy Thi Luu, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on February 20th, 2024, at the age of 85, in Irving, Texas. She was married for 62 years to her husband, Xiem Huy Luu, who passed two years prior, on March 13th, 2022.
Born on August 31st, 1938, in China to Vietnamese parents, Quy came to Vietnam when she was 12 years old. She met and married Xiem Huy Luu on December 1st, 1960.
During the Fall of Saigon in 1975, unfortunately, the family split up. Quy encouraged her husband to seek refuge in America first and establish a new home and hope for their family. Quy patiently waited in Saigon and raised 5 children alone until she was reunited with her husband in Clinton, Oklahoma in 1980.
With 5 young children to feed and without knowing a word of English, she started to work in the kitchen at the VA Hospital. She later earned a chef certification where she proudly worked among all the other chefs until she retired in 2000.
Quy was a strong, independent, and determined woman. Without knowing much English, she was extremely proud of herself for obtaining her driver's license and US citizenship, which she even opted for the English version of the test.
Quy loved her family very much. Quy and her husband devoted over 10 years of their life helping their daughter and grandchildren in California before reuniting with the rest of their family in Texas in 2013. She loved family gatherings - hearing and sharing stories of what everyone was doing in their life. She enjoyed keeping in touch with families and friends through Facetime to chit-chat about the latest updates.
Quy is known for always being ready for the camera with her photogenic smile. She had a great sense of humor and knew how to laugh at herself, with or without her dentures. She was selfless and always wanted the best for her children and grandchildren. She dedicated her life to being a good wife, a wonderful and strong mother to her children, and a caring grandmother to her grandchildren. She once told her husband: "I would rather have all my children than win the lottery."
Quy’s hobbies were cooking Vietnamese dishes; traveling with her family abroad or to California - her favorite place to visit; going to the casino to play slots; and playing slot games on the many iPads she owned at home.
She is survived by her sisters: Nguyen Thi Hue and Nguyen Thi Lan (in Vietnam); sons: Vu Luu and wife, Trinh Luu, and Phong Luu and wife, Thuy Luu; daughters: Huyen Le and husband, Chu Le; Van Nguyen; and Thuy Luu and husband, Vinh Le; and grandchildren: Christopher Huy and Charles Hoang and Christine Hang Le, Timothy Quang and Vivian Thanh Thao Nguyen, Dustin Khang Luu, Liem and Thai Son Luu, and Cody Khoa Le.
Quy's memorial service will be held on Friday, March 8th, 2024, at 10:00am CST at Moore Memorial in Arlington, Texas, where the burial will follow.
