Peter is preceded in death by his parents, Minna Emilie Schmitz (Wehner) and Richard Otto Schmitz, and his sister Rosamarie Jache.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Esther Fe Schmitz (Tuggy), children Eileen Schmitz, Vivian Schmitz (Ken), and Peter Schmitz (Becky), 12 grandchildren: Drew, Michael, Brittany, Lindsey, Kelly, Daniel, Amanda (Lewis), Ashley, Ruth, Emily, Amanda (Koballa) and Benjamin.
A self-taught man, Peter completed Hochschule (Germany) in watch-making and learned his way into manufacturing management. He was curious about everything, taught himself English and Spanish, and was always reading or listening to his extensive collection of classical music.
He was a devoted member of The Oaks Baptist Church.
Peter was first and foremost a man after God’s heart. His faith and unswerving commitment to the Lord guided his life from childhood on. He met the love of his life, Esther Tuggy, in Mérida, Venezuela, while working in evangelistic meetings in the mountain towns surrounding Mérida, and continued to witness to the transforming power of Christ in everything he did throughout his life. Peter was a faithful and committed father, working hard, long hours to provide for his family and ensure his wife and 3 children were well cared for. He loved adventure, travel and camping, and made many special memories with his family on trips across the United States and around the world.
He was known to his friends, neighbors and co-workers, as a man of his word, with firm convictions, quiet strength, perseverance and hope. He blessed many lives with kindness, humility and generosity, and shared his wisdom and knowledge with others by example and inspiration. He was a living testimony to the greatness of God, His justice and mercy.
