On Friday, August 20th, 2021 our beloved “Super Mario” Lopez Rangel passed away after a three-year, courageous, hard fought battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. He was 58 years young. Mario was born March 9, 1963, the son of late Lucas R. Rangel Sr. and Delores L. Rangel.
Mario was preceded in death by his son Vincent C. Rangel and his father Lucas R. Rangel Sr.
Mario is survived by his loving mother, Delores L. Rangel, his devoted wife Lisa Rangel.
Children: Miranda K. Rangel (Alex Laza); Mariah C. Rangel (Luis Olmos); Adrian Pineda; Grandson Isaac C. Olmos; Granddaughter Aniah Olmos.
Surviving Siblings: Lucas L. Rangel. Jr; Lucy Rangel-Reyes (the Late Ken Reyes); Sandy Rangel-Woods (Ken) and the “Houston Girl”-aka Becky Rangel.
Mario grew up in Arlington, was a 1981 graduate of Sam Houston High School. He found a passion for soccer during his jr high and high school years. He played on various select, co-ed and indoor teams. When his playing days were over, he refereed and coached Miranda and Mariah’s teams.
Mario’s second passion was football, he LOVED watching football with his family and friends. He definitely hated to see his team lose, especially to the Dallas Cowboys or the New England Patriots or he would say the “Cowgirls” or the “Cheatriots”. And if your team was losing or lost to the Steelers, Mario would call or text you and tease you of the loss! It was a fun rivalry.
Mario learned at a young age from his father the importance of values and work ethics. Him along with his siblings would go work with Mr. Rangel Sr. at his D and L Janitorial Company.
Because of this, Mario had a 28-year career with UPS as a package car driver delivering packages in the University Park Area. During those years, Mario developed a unique relationship with his customers and co-workers. They appreciated his attitude, humor and can-do attitude earning their friendship. Without any hesitation, Mario would demonstrate his leadership abilities and offer advice and assistance. He was a great leader, a great friend.
While working at UPS he would meet his future wife, Lisa. Finding love at work was something they both didn’t expect. They loved each other so much and it gave Lisa great joy to be able to be by his side to help raise his daughters to be successful, beautiful and smart young women.
Mario’s support and work ethic didn’t stop at UPS or at home. He was always willing to help his parents, siblings, and friends whenever he could. Always a phone call away.
When Maio was told of cancer diagnosis, he had a very strong will to live, to fight it with all his might! During his physician visits, they were amazed at Mario’s upbeat, positive attitude of his cancer. He loved to tease the staff with his Steeler wardrobe and game highlights. His pleasant personality was contagious to everyone, he was loved by all.
Towards the end, the best job Mario held was when he became a “PoPo” for the 1st time. Isaac came into Mario’s life July 21, 2017, they were inseparable from the first day. Isaac was Mario’s motivation to live the rest of his life to the fullest, not to be miserable. Mario’s love for Isaac was and will be beyond infinity. Regarding his granddaughter, Mario was very impressed of how smart Aniah is. He loved when she would spend time with him—watching movies and having conversations. He deeply loved his grandkids. And now will be their forever guardian angel!
