Robert Akers stated just before he died in 2009 that “She is my rock”. He was referring to his wife Katie J. Akers, known affectionately as Momma Kate, Mom, Mee Maw, Katie and Sweetheart by all. After 90 years of life including 66 years as the wife of Robert O Akers, she has been called home by her loving Lord Jesus. However, if it had been her call, she would have stayed with us another 20 years.
Katie was the family hostess, gathering all relatives and friends to her home every Christmas and Thanksgiving along with everyone’s birthday celebration. A great cook, awesome decorator and top notch seamstress, she created and made all of daughter Katrina’s rodeo outfits for many years. She also designed and built their home in Grand Prairie in 1968. You could always find Katie in the mornings drinking coffee at the kitchen table and correcting the grammar of many a writer for the Dallas Morning News.
As one of five sisters and three brothers in the Cress family, none was more optimistic, conservative, generous, pragmatic, courageous and nurturing than Katie. From being a model in her 20’s to a duplicate Bridge player in her 70’s, Katie was a gentle Muse we all learned from. She was Katrina’s best friend and advocate for life…the world’s greatest Rodeo Mom.
A special thank you to our cousin Eddy Thompson for his loving care of Mom the last few months. Also, a big thank you to all the angels with Community Hospice at Arlington Memorial Hospital. Miss you we shall Miss Kate. You leave a precious void that no one will ever fill.
She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Akers, her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter Katrina Pawley and husband Terry, her two sisters Joyce Looney and Louise Oldham and numerous nieces and nephews. Also, her dearest friends Nell Caddell, Joyce Williams and Mary Weir.
Visitation will be held at Moore’s Funeral Home in Arlington on Thursday 6-8pm. Funeral Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church 401 Church St. Grand Prairie, on Friday @11:00am.
Arrangements under the direction of Moore Funeral Home, Arlington, TX.
