John Moseley Banks, of Arlington, Texas, passed away on April 22, 2023, surrounded by his wife and daughters. John will always be remembered as a Christ centered man, a loving and supportive husband, father, and Pop Pop, a strong and brilliant brother and uncle, and a steadfast friend, with a generous heart.
On February 4, 1953, John was born in Roanoke, Virginia to Pen and Catherine Banks. He grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, where he lived with his two brothers, Philip and Jay, sister Katie, and his parents. An active kid with a love of life, John enjoyed exploring the woods around their home and seeing what type of fun he and his brothers could come up with. He also liked his time spent with his grandparents in Columbia, SC. During his childhood and teenage years, John was fortunate to travel to many places around the world with his family. He especially enjoyed reminiscing over his childhood and teen years spent in Croatia, Myanmar (formerly Burma), and Yugoslavia, and his time on the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth ships.
John attended Wake Forest University, where he met the love of his life, Nancy, or Nan as he called her, at the young age of 18 on a bench in the Wake Forest quad. He graduated with a degree in History, and after graduating, married his love Nancy in 1976. He explored different opportunities during his time in North Carolina, Oregon, and Texas, but settled on a career as a stock broker for various brokerage companies. Ultimately, he found his passion as a highly successful executive managing financial advisors in Fort Worth for many years. He was repeatedly recognized by the industry winning multiple national awards, including a Premier Manager award. John was also actively involved in Episcopal church leadership in the Arlington and Fort Worth area for many years, along with other leadership and volunteer roles in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
John was a man with many interests. He was an avid reader, enjoying a myriad of books. He especially enjoyed classical music, fly fishing for trout, boating, bird watching, history, and always having a pocketknife in his pocket. When he and Nan (and baby Katie) moved to Texas in the 80s from Portland, OR, he fully embraced all that the DFW area offered, but especially loved Fort Worth. There were many days and nights spent at the Fort Worth Stockyards and Fort Worth Stock Show, the Kimball Art Museum, and Van Cliburn piano recitals. He always appreciated a Kincaid burger, Joe T Garcia’s fajitas and margaritas, Risky’s, Angelo’s, or Railhead barbecue, and various other iconic Fort Worth spots. One of his favorite pastimes was attending Texas Rangers baseball games with his wife, daughters, and friends. He also shared his love of travel with his wife and daughters, traveling to many places around the world, with Cannon Beach, Oregon a favorite trip to take with his wife, Nan.
John was a dedicated husband, and loved and supported Nan with his whole heart and soul. He was most proud of his daughters, sons in law, and his beautiful grandchildren. He always showed up for his family, and provided constant advice, support, understanding, and love for his children. For those in his life (and even those he just met) he provided a friendly ear, encouragement, and kindness.
There is an absence that will be felt forever with the loss of John; but his legacy will live on with his family and those that love him. His voice saying “darlin,” “sweetheart,” or “kiddo” will linger in his daughters’ minds forever. Despite the gravity of this loss, we are at peace knowing John is without pain and with his Lord and Savior.
John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy; his daughters Kate (Steve) Weyrich, Sara (Patrick) Thompson, and Elizabeth (Joshua) Goertz; his grandchildren, Scarlett, Sadie, and Lane Weyrich, Logan and John Thompson, and Jack and Zoe Goertz; his brother James (Kathy) Banks; his sister Kate (James) Culbreth; his uncle Walter (Yvonne) Banks; his aunt Jeanette Allison; his sisters in law Barbara Richardson, and Kay (Ted) Meseck; and his brothers in law Daniel (Angela) Johnston and Scott Johnston. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews from New York, California, Texas, and North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Pendleton and Catherine Banks, his brother Philip, his mother in law and father in law, Phyllis and Neil Johnston, his brother in law, Gary Richardson, and sister in law, Linda Johnston.
A memorial gathering will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. with a memorial service immediately following at 2:00 p.m. John is in the care of Moore Funeral Home.
